SEEDS News, SEEDS News, January - March 2008 SEEDS has a mission to teach kids civic responsibility and accountability in a sustainable society. VT Chapter of SEEDS Starting off the semester was a series of information booths held in Squires Student Center where officers recruited new volunteers and saw the addition of 75 names to the SEEDS e-mail listserv. Participation in the October 16th VT Engage Organization Fair was another chance for VT SEEDS officers and volunteers to demonstrate their interest and hard work in reaching out to others in the community and providing a means for others to get involved. The VT Engage event attracted many new volunteers to a successful Stream Clean up the following Saturday morning. The week of October 22nd – 27th was marked by Virginia Tech’s first Sustainability Week and the VT Chapter of SEEDS was present and involved with the week’s activities. VT SEEDS President Robert Jacks worked closely throughout the semester with officers of the Environmental Coalition at Virginia Tech to promote the EC’s goal of becoming a true coalition of organizations working together. The Environmental Sustainability Organization Showcase was the perfect place for VT SEEDS to preview its major fundraiser, an Organic Chocolate Sale.
Selling bars of organic chocolate was nothing short of success. Many thanks to the companies who donated hundreds of bars of chocolate to SEEDS: Seeds of Change, Dagoba, Vivani, and Green & Blacks. There were over 50 pre-orders for organic chocolate which brought in donations from Virginia to California. The Organic Chocolate Sale was the most successful fundraiser to date by VTSEEDS. Donations totaled more than $2200 for SEEDS. Due to popular demand, VT SEEDS will bring back a limited supply of organic chocolate for sale in February 2008. VT SEEDS officers and volunteers ended their semester of hard work and success with a movie night and pizza on December 1st. They even did some planning for activies and fundraising ideas for spring 2008

As part of our New River tributary studies and restoration, we were taking a look at stream health and freshwater heritage along local tributaries of the New River such as Stroubles Creek in Blacksburg, Laural Branch Creek at Hawk's Ridge Retreat, Floyd Co., and Pond Drain at Mt. Lake. |
