DAY 1 - Flight to Nairobi via Amsterdam. DAY 2 - Arrival in Nairobi and orientation. DAY 3 - Overnight train ride through the Rift Valley to Kisumu. Includes meals & sleeping berths. DAY 4 - Arrival in Kisumu where we are transported by van to the town of Yala in the highlands; orientation and homestay assignments. DAY 5 THRU DAY 7 - Daily activities with flexible schedule for work and play. Some examples of projects include working with women's groups, assisting after school clubs, guest "teaching" in elementary and/or secondary schools, helping in local clinics, assist in community home repair, or helping on town engineering projects. DAY 8 THRU DAY 9 - Travel to Imbo on the shores of Lake Victoria. Overnight stay includes a chance to observe lake wildlife, including hippo, and a field trip to Ramogi, a hilltop site overlooking the Yala River delta that is the fabled birthplace of the entire Luo culture. DAY 10 - Travel to the Massai Mara. We stop about half way before descending into the Rift Valley in the town of Kericho, the heart of tea country, for an overnight hotel stay. DAY 11 - Arrival in the Mara; orientation and homestay assignments. DAY 12 THRU DAY 14 - Daily activities with flexible schedule for work and play. Some examples of projects include working on a local water pipe-line, assist in veterinary treatment of cattle for tsetse fly and tick eradication on the Savannah, assisting after school clubs, helping in local shops or clinics, or assist in community home repair. DAY 15 - Although you are living in the Savannah, we get a chance to go into the Massai Mara National Park for a DAY of wildlife viewing. Note: this DAY is interchangeable according to weather and travel conditions. DAY 16 - Travel back to Nairobi. DAY 17 - Travel back to Washington, D.C. via Amsterdam. |
