Field Camp Itinerary
"Pardon me salamander, can you please quiet down, I'm listening for raptors!"
23 - 27 June For ages 7-9, 9AM-4PM*

What is a food web? Are we part of it? Why are those Kestrels looking at me
that way? We'll see how some living things farm their food. We'll see how we farm our food!
We'll learn how to carefully look for and collect creatures as delicate as salamanders.
We'll learn how to spy for raptors in the sky! We'll even do some belly-slappin' and learn some
raptor songs.

Monday
Why is a creek around here called "Poverty Creek", yet there's a diverse community of amphibians along the way to the New River. What's a "community"?

Tuesday
Sky Islands. Yeah, we really have an island here, but not like you are thinking!
- Hike Bald Knob. See the raptors climb the thermals. What's a thermal?

Wednesday
SEEDS "locavores". Eat food that comes from nearby.
- Floyd County VA... our "bread basket". Visit Seven Springs Farm and a local market. Learn about Commercial composting.
*Don't forget your baithing suit...and sorry, no barefootin'

Thursday
Hawks Ridge Retreat, Floyd County.
-Hawks Ridge Retreat is a 77-acre wildlife sanctuary stewarded by SEEDS Board Member, Donna Douglas. SEEDS works closely with Donna to provide a unique place for people to explore nature.  Laurel Branch Creek flows through Hawk's Ridge on to the Little River>New River.... IT'LL BE A HOLLER!

Friday
The web of life in Poverty Creek hollow. Follow the creek to Tom's Creek and the New River.
- What do we mean by our "Freshwater Heritage"?

*On Friday afternoon the kids will make presentations from 3:00 to 4:00 at the Shadow Lake Village Common House.
