Field Camp Itinerary
Passport to Ecology and Nature
16 - 20 June For ages 7-9, 9AM-4PM*

We share our environment with living things from south to north; and from east to west. Come learn about our special place in the southern Appalachian Mountains. We'll learn to carefully collect and observe living things. We'll hopefully learn to better cooperate with the world around us and have fun along the way. So grab your SEEDS passport and come explore the "towns" for people and other living things.

Monday
Nature's cycles around here. Not bicycle, silly.
- Our freshwater heritage. Blacksburg to the New River and back via Stroubles Creek. Get ready to get your feet wet. Oh... don't forget your bathing suit!

Tuesday
Salt Pond Mountain
- Why do people around here call this "the top of the world" and a "sky island"?
- Is this "Mountain Lake" or "Salt Pond"?

Wednesday
Be a "locavore". Eat food and build your house from stuff that comes from nearby.
- Floyd County VA... our "bread basket". Visit Phoenix Hardwoods and the Jacksonville Center.
*Don't forget your baithing suit...and sorry, no barefootin'

Thursday
Hawks Ridge Retreat, Floyd County.
-Hawks Ridge Retreat is a 77-acre wildlife sanctuary stewarded by SEEDS Board Member, Donna Douglas. SEEDS works closely with Donna to provide a unique place for people to explore nature.  Laurel Branch Creek flows through Hawk's Ridge on to the Little River>New River.... IT'LL BE A HOLLER!

Friday
Over to Newport and hollerin' to the New ... back by 2.
- Find that newt! How about that slimy? Or, maybe the red-back?
- Can you tell a buzzard that it's a turkey?

*On Friday afternoon the kids will make presentations from 3:00 to 4:00 at the Shadow Lake Village Common House.

Please note: This schedule is subject to change due to weather and accessibility. Parents will be notified when significant, pre-planned changes are made.

We are looking forward to a fun and rewarding camp experience!
